About the Artist

About

Portrait of the Artist as a Young ManDaniel Sutherland studied photography at The Art Institute of Boston and The Maine Photographic Workshops, then spent three years working in fashion and commercial studios in and around Boston. He learned creative vision with Craig Stevens and digital photography with John Paul Caponigro. He is regular contributor to Nantucket Publications and works as a free-lance photographer. Daniel is a long standing member of the Artists Association of Nantucket and is an advisor to the Board of Directors. While a board member he spearheaded the creation of the digital labs at The Artist Association Workshops and now teaches evening Adobe Photoshop classes there year-round. He is represented in New England by Joyce Paulson and Associates. Collections include Fidelity Investments, Cambridge Savings Bank, Bunny Whiteley and Mrs. Paul Mellon.

Artist Statement

The Nantucket landscape’s elusive nature is persistent. Making adequate photographs here is fairly easy given the intrinsic beauty of the island. Creating exceptional imagery, however, is exceedingly difficult. Challenging the observer to remain open, know the land, be willing to fail—frequently—and return to favored locations again and again. My empathy toward the landscape is a natural outgrowth of having spent the summers of my life here. A deep connection to the environment matured and found expression in photography while living here year-round for the past 17 years. The intimate images presented are the result of studying and photographing the land and rigorous, often heartbreaking, editing. Yet within the confines and trials the geography, weather and seasons offer here, I still find remarkable flexibility in expressing my inner sensitivity. I strive for a sense of transcendence in the representational—to bring the viewer a unique experience of time and place—illuminating moments that reveal openings through which one may pass renewed, edified. Contextually, these images represent the most extensive record of the preserved landscape on Nantucket and will serve to elucidate for future generations what inspired their predecessors to so rigorously protect this unique environment that the Nature Conservancy has listed as one of forty "Last Great Places". Generosity, foresight and largess by current stewards of this magnificent island ensure that the exemplary standard and tradition of conservation continues. Daniel Sutherland 2007

Process

Digital imaging has revolutionized photography in the same way Ansel Adams’ invention of the zone system did. Photographers have strived for mastery of the final print for over 150 years. The ability to capture a scene digitally or use traditional cameras and films then digitize the image by scanning is allowing us to expand that mastery. Intelligent image editing programs allow for delicate and exact manipulation of photoraphs that is just not possible in the traditional darkroom. The technology also allows photographers to choose a variety of printing methods and papers that extend their creative range and provide an archival solution for color imaging. The fully realized final print—the expression of what the artist observed and even felt at the time shutter was tripped—is what Adams had in mind when he created the term “previsualization” for the photographic process. Ansel was a master manipulator of the photographic print and would have been thrilled by the recent advances in the medium he helped popularize.

Nantucket in SoHo

The hugely successful Nantucket in SoHo exhibition was spearheaded and curated by my friend Robert Foster—the then gallery director of the Artists Association of Nantucket—in November of 2004. We sought to bring Nantucket artists to Manhattan during our off-season. The setting for this ambitious project was the recently vacated Studio di Modica in SoHo. The opening was attended by an estimated 350 people with the inevitable rumors of famous people who were already in their cabs and sure to arrive at any minute! As a featured artist and co-curator, I enjoyed the excellent exposure and the harrowing experience of corraling fifteen very talented Island artists and hanging their work in Manhattan. The show was mentioned on Page Six.

Ralph Lauren teams up with The Nantucket Conservation Foundation in 2008

The Ralph Lauren Store at 16 Main Street on Nantucket generously provided it's highly visible exterior shop display windows to celebrate and promote The Nantucket Conservation Foundation this past winter. The creative team at RL and I selected eight images from my catalog to highlight preserved island landscapes. The installation featured the largest prints I've produced to date. Sizes range from 3 x 5 to 4 x 7 feet! Ralph Lauren is setting a wonderful example of community stewardship. Personally, I was very excited for the opportunity to work with them in creating a stunning visual display for downtown Nantucket. The Ralph Lauren team generously offered to frame the images when the installation concluded this spring. These high impact over-sized prints are now on display at the Hy-Line Cruises terminal on Straight Wharf, Nantucket where they will continue to highlight the efforts of Nantucket Conservation Foundation and provide welcome promotion for my ongoing project of photographing Nantucket's elusive unique landscape.

Nantucket Vineyards

Complimenting their major renovation over at the "The Brewery", Nantucket Vineyards are in the process of re-designing their wine labels featuring photography by yours truly. I am genuinely honored that they have selected my work for their new look. Limited edition archival pigment prints will adorn the walls of the new wine tasting area and we will have note cards and postcards for sale as well. If your visiting the island, it's a great way to cap off a day at the beach and rub elbows with some of us locals. So stop by for a growler, wine tasting or plan your next big party there. Complete event packages will be available for up to 250 people (I am told). Their selection of spirits is also first rate. Find them here http://www.ciscobrewers.com/ on the web.

The Nantucket Conservation Foundation

The mission of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation is to assist in the preservation of Nantucket’s character by permanently conserving, maintaining, and managing natural areas and habitats and to encourage an appreciation of and interest in the Island’s natural resources. Please visit the NCF site for additional information. http://www.nantucketconservation.com/ Throughout the past decade I have granted images and graphic design services the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Their commitment to island conservation and my interest in the natural landscape of Nantucket make them an obvious choice as a beneficiary of my passion. Many, if not most of their publications including maps and guides feature images I have taken over the years on properties protected by the NCF. It has been and will continue to be my pleasure to provide the Foundation with the best possible photography to help convey the importance and foresight of their mission. All who love and enjoy Nantucket benefit from the immense effort that has been applied to keeping much of the island open for the enjoyment of the public and the preservation of rare and endangered habitats and species. While many other organizations have and continue to make significant contributions in the conservation effort, they are certainly inspired by the ideals set forth by the NCF and its founders. In appreciation of my contributions over the years the NCF generously offered to fund the rebuilding of my website. As with all creative endeavors, it will be evolving and expanding as an expression of my sensitivity to the island surroundings; a growing catalog of the elusive and unique visual gems Nantucket has to offer.
